Art Deco Framing for a 1920s Gelatin Silver Print

by | Aug 15, 2025 | Conservation, Custom Framing, Uncategorized

This custom framing project highlights a handcrafted Art Deco style frame created specifically to house a 1920s gelatin silver print portrait. The custom frame draws inspiration from the geometric elegance of the Art Deco period while incorporating traditional gilding and museum-quality conservation methods.

The frame was handmade and water-gilded with 12k white gold leaf over a dark green bole. The cool brilliance of the white gold is enhanced by the dark green bole, producing a refined tonal contrast.

Incised Gilded Design with Hand-Rubbed Contrast

The Art Deco profile features a precisely incised deco band pattern, cut directly into the frame surface. After gilding, the negative space within the design was selectively rubbed back by hand to create contrast between matte and burnished areas. This technique emphasizes the linear rhythm of the design and allows light to interact dynamically across the surface.

The result is a frame that is visually striking yet restrained, echoing the sophistication and modernity of the 1920s without distracting from the portrait itself.

Archival Matting and Reversible Photograph Mounting

Preservation was central to every aspect of this framing project. The gelatin silver print was matted with an 8-ply archival ragboard mat, providing space between the glass and the print while allowing a visual margin around the image.

The photograph was mounted to a ragboard support using archival photo corners, a fully reversible and non-invasive method used in museum and conservation framing. The photo corners are concealed beneath the mat, ensuring a clean presentation and reversibility.

Museum Glass® for UV Protection and Clarity

To protect the portrait from environmental damage, the frame was glazed with Museum Glass®, which provides 99% UV protection to prevent fading and deterioration. Its advanced anti-reflective coating minimizes glare and reflections, allowing viewers to experience the photograph with exceptional clarity and depth.

This glazing choice is ideal for historic photographs, offering maximum protection without compromising visual quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of custom frame is best for a 1920s gelatin silver photograph?

An Art Deco–inspired frame is an appropriate choice for a 1920s gelatin silver print because its geometric lines and refined ornamentation complement the photograph’s period. A handcrafted frame can be designed specifically for the image while incorporating archival matting, UV-filtering glazing, and reversible mounting methods.

How does museum-quality framing protect an antique photograph?

Museum-quality framing protects an antique photograph by using archival, acid-free materials and mounting techniques that do not permanently alter the print. A deep 8ply ragboard mat keeps the photograph separated from the glazing, while UV-filtering glazing helps reduce damage caused by light exposure. Together, these materials support the photograph’s long-term preservation.

What is a water-gilded Art Deco frame?

A water-gilded Art Deco frame combines traditional gold-leaf application with geometric ornament inspired by the Art Deco period. In this project, 12k white gold leaf was applied over dark green bole. Selectively burnished and hand-rubbed areas reveal subtle tonal variations and accentuate the frame’s incised geometric pattern.

Is Museum Glass® recommended for framing historic photographs?

Museum Glass® is an excellent glazing option for historic and heirloom photographs. It provides 99% UV protection to help limit fading and deterioration, while its anti-reflective coating reduces glare and preserves visual clarity. Although UV-filtering glazing offers substantial protection, framed photographs should still be kept away from direct sunlight and excessive heat or humidity.
