A view of the Hashimoto kite from the right side in the custom plexiglass vitrine

A Custom Vitrine for “An Infinite Expanse of Sky” by Jacob Hashimoto

This petite kite is part of an edition of 300, from the January 20, 1998-September 26,1999 installation at the MCA Chicago. The installation consisted of 10,000 handmade kites which were suspended from the ceiling to form a single arch above the seating area in the café.  The installation was the artist’s first solo museum exhibition.  In the installation, Hashimoto redefined the screen painting of Japan through the assemblage of small paper ‘kites’ modeled after a traditional kite style from Northern Japan with imagery of white clouds on a sky-blue ground.

An 11″ x 15″ UV filtering acrylic vitrine was fabricated with bubble free museum seams.  The kite was reversibly mounted to an archival, white linen wrapped mount.  The piece was elevated 3/4″ from the linen mount to give it a floating effect within the display. Given the small size, the vitrine was designed to be versatile, so it is deep enough for it to stand upright on a shelf or could be installed flush to a wall an integrated cleat.

Roger Brown Playboy Bunny Maquette for LA Office inside a vitrine on a custom white mount

A Custom Vitrine for “Maquette for L.A. Rabbit Head” by Roger Brown

This mixed media maquette was made by Roger Brown in 1992 in preparation for a lobby sculpture for Playboy. Roger Brown (1941-1997), was an American painter, and associated with the Chicago Imagists movement.

The mount and vitrine were designed to provide a minimal backdrop for the bold maquette.

A streamlined, custom white mount with internal armature were fabricated to secure the piece.  A UV filtering acrylic vitrine was fabricated to protect the sculpture from exposure dust and ultra-violet rays while allowing for display.

A Custom Display for an

Heirloom Sgian-dubh

A custom double post mount was made to display this heirloom Sgian-Dubh with sheath.  A sgian-dubh is a small single edged knife worn as part of Scottish Highland Dress.  The African black wood hilt, along with the sterling silver elements and the precious stone mount is accommpanied by a decorative leather and sterling silver sheath with a thistle design.

A double post steel mount was fabricated to elevate and present each piece at a slight angle.  The mount was painted with a black, powdercoated finish.  The base has a dado step to accommodate the vitrine.

A Vera Wang wedding gown displayed in a custom vitrine

A Custom Vitrine for a

Vera Wang Wedding Gown

From the moment our client came to us with her elegant Vera Wang Hayley Wedding Gown and the desire to have it on display, we were in love with the idea. The elaborate gown was far too strikingly elegant to be tucked away in an heirloom box in a closet.

With the neutral sash and neutral décor where the Hayley gown was destined to be displayed, we selected neutral Belgian linen for the backing material in the vitrine. Given the volume of the dress, we wanted to design the display case so that it would be deep enough and wide enough to not crush the dress, yet not overwhelm the room it would be displayed in.
