Supporting the Past: A Custom Museum Mount for a Pre-Columbian Sculpture

by | Sep 30, 2025 | Custom Mounts, Projects

A well-designed museum mount should provide dependable support while remaining visually unobtrusive. For this pre-Columbian sculpture, our studio created a custom mount that allows the object to be displayed securely and appreciated from multiple angles without distracting from its sculptural form.

The Challenge of Mounting an Irregular Object

Ancient sculptures and archaeological fragments rarely have flat, stable surfaces designed for modern display. Their weight may be unevenly distributed, while fragile edges, surface irregularities, and areas of historic loss can limit where a mount may safely make contact.

A successful museum mount must therefore accomplish several objectives:

  • Support the object’s weight without placing unnecessary pressure on vulnerable areas
  • Hold the sculpture securely in its intended display position
  • Avoid abrasion or movement at the points of contact
  • Remain as visually discreet as possible
  • Permit the object to be removed when examination or conservation is required

For this sculpture, the mount also needed to accommodate its relatively shallow profile while providing enough stability for freestanding display.

A Custom Powder-Coated Steel Base

The mount was constructed with a custom powder-coated steel base. Steel provides the necessary weight and structural stability, while the low-sheen black powder-coated finish creates a clean, durable surface that visually recedes beneath the sculpture.

The base was proportioned specifically for the object. It is broad enough to establish a stable footprint without appearing oversized or competing with the sculpture.

A Cast, Object-Specific Support

A cast support was created to conform to the sculpture’s irregular lower contours. Rather than forcing the object to rest on a few isolated points, the fitted support distributes its weight more evenly across appropriate contact areas.

The support was carefully shaped to follow the existing profile of the sculpture without altering the object itself. Its dark finish visually integrates it with the steel base, allowing the support to remain discreet when the sculpture is viewed from the front or at an angle.

From the reverse, the additional fitted support stabilizes the sculpture while respecting its uneven surface and preserving access to the historic inscription. The result is a secure mounting system that responds to the individual shape and condition of the object.

Preservation Through Thoughtful Display

Museum mounting is both a technical and an aesthetic discipline. A mount must protect an object, but it should also improve the way that object can be studied and experienced.

In this case, the finished mount presents the sculpture upright and at an appropriate viewing height while allowing its frontal decoration, profile, thickness, and reverse to be visible. The understated black base provides a strong visual foundation without drawing attention away from the piece.

At Artifact Services, every museum mount is designed around the specific material, condition, weight, shape, and display requirements of the object. Whether created for a private collection, gallery, museum, or institutional exhibition, a properly fitted mount helps make the safe display of culturally and historically significant objects possible.

Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Mounts

Where can I have a custom museum mount made for a sculpture or artifact?

Artifact Services designs and fabricates custom museum mounts for sculptures, archaeological objects, decorative arts, ethnographic materials, and historic artifacts. Each mount is developed around the object’s dimensions, weight, condition, material, and intended display position. Our Chicago studio works with private collectors, museums, galleries, designers, and institutions.

Why does an ancient sculpture need a custom display mount?

Ancient sculptures and archaeological objects often have irregular, damaged, or incomplete bases that prevent them from standing safely on their own. A custom mount provides stability while distributing weight across carefully selected contact areas. This helps reduce the risk of tipping, abrasion, movement, or concentrated pressure on vulnerable parts of the object.

Can a museum mount support an artifact without permanently altering it?

In many cases, yes. Museum mounts are generally designed to support an object mechanically without drilling, adhering to, or permanently modifying it. The goal is to create a stable, removable mounting system that respects the object’s existing structure and condition. The appropriate design is determined after the artifact has been examined.

How much does a custom museum mount cost?

The cost depends on the object’s size, weight, condition, complexity, display angle, and the materials required. A small object needing straightforward support may require a relatively simple mount, while a large, fragile, or unusually shaped sculpture may need engineering, testing, multiple supports, or installation services. Artifact Services can provide a project-specific proposal after reviewing photographs, dimensions, condition information, and display requirements.
