This 19th century frame arrived to us with several areas of loss and discolored overpaint. The remaining compo ornamentation was very unstable throughout. The owner was able to save most of the fragments in a small bag for us to use during the treatment.
The retained fragments were carefully mapped out and placed for treatment. Leaving a handful of losses that required casting during treatment. The frame and fragments were surface cleaned using a combination of aqueous and dry methods. The ornamentation was consolidated and the retained fragements were secured. The areas of remaining loss were filled, cast and recreated. The fills were ingilded and retouched.
Once the frame was completed, the drawing was assembled into the frame with a replacement archival ragboard mat, 4ply ragboard mount, fluted polyproylene backboard and UV filtering Museum Glass.
